What do sunflower oil, orange peels and crushed walnut shells have to do with your winter tires, summer tires and all season tires? Much more than you may think. In an effort to combat the rising prices of raw materials and petroleum based products, tire manufacturers are racing to come up with more cost-effective and sustainable materials. By recycling these materials into tires, not only is waste reduced, but the amount of hazardous petroleum-based synthetic rubbers and by-products is also cut drastically. Look for tires such as Michelin’s Green-X line with their patented Helio Compound made with Sunflower oil for greater elasticity and traction in wet weather, or Yokohama’s E-spec lineup which features the use of orange oil and other naturally derived components in place of traditional petroleum products.

Eco Friendly Tire Facts

Presently, a passenger or light truck tire uses between five and ten gallons of petroleum ingredients in its production. Using natural oils and fibers in the place of those high-priced petroleum by-products reduces the cost of production and translates into more pricing stability for the consumer without impacting quality or integrity of the tires.

With eco-friendly products becoming a trend in today’s enviro-conscious market tire makers, much like auto makers, are looking to gain the most fuel economy out of their products. Manufacturers like Bridgestone with their Ecopia lineup boast results (in controlled testing) of up to seven litres of fuel savings a month or up to $400 of fuel savings over the life of the tire. These promises are often complemented with class-leading tread life warranties also.

How Tire Efficiency Works

Rolling resistance is caused by friction. With each revolution of a wheel under the weight of a vehicle, the tire goes through a cycle of deformation and recovery. By using materials and compounds which return to their shape more rapidly (such as silica), manufacturers are able to diminish the friction caused by traditional materials which are slow to return to form.

How to Reduce Gas Consumption this Summer

With gas prices expected to sky-rocket throughout the summer a good set of eco-friendly, fuel-fighting tires can help keep your hard-earned money in your wallet and not in the tank.

Interested in learning more about eco-friendly tire options and how you can reduce your carbon footprint? Drop by and see us at our 40 Morrow Road or 696 Bayview Drive location and one of our knowledgeable sales staff would be happy to help you!

This is the second part of our blog on spare tires. Our last post, What’s in your trunk, discussed the evolution of spare tires and changes manufacturers have made to reduce vehicle weight and increase fuel economy; scrapping that bulky spare tire for starters. This week, we’ll explore the alternative options manufacturers have begun offering as original equipment in lieu of the conventional spare.

Run-flat Tires

Run-flat tires provide peace of mind and security by eliminating the need to get out of your vehicle on the side of a busy road when your tire has been punctured. This is achieved by using a stiffer internal construction that is capable of temporarily carrying the weight of the vehicle even after the tire has lost all air pressure. These tires have the ability to maintain their shape and carrying capacity for up to 50 miles at speeds up to 55mph. Due to the rigid construction of these tires they must be used with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The most common complaint of these tires is their often high prices and short tread life.

Tire Repair Kits vs Spare Tires

While the space-saving convenience of a can of foam is a great draw for the budget-conscious consumer trying to cut costs and get the maximum space and fuel economy in a brand new vehicle; it will do little to help in the event of a catastrophic tire failure, otherwise referred to as a “blow-out”. This foam can also cause damage to and corrosion of TMPS sensors leading to costly replacements.

Similar to aerosol tire repair kits, some manufacturers now offer miniature compressors, complete with latex sealant in order to rapidly inflate and repair a flat tire. This option presents the same problems as the aerosol foam; potential damage to the TMPS sensors, and of no use in the event of a tire blow-out.

Folding Spare Tires or Conventional Spare Tires?

Folding spare tires provide you with a tire for temporary use, but use less space than a conventional spare tire. A popular option for car makers many years ago, folding spares are becoming scarcely used in new vehicles. So, how does one fold a tire? The simple answer, you don’t. A folding spare is comprised of a steel wheel with a tire pre-mounted, but un-inflated. The tire is inflated when needed with a can of pressurized gas, or the tedious use of a hand or foot pump. While these folding spares are advantageous for saving space, they can be difficult to deflate and return to their compartment after use. If your vehicle is equipped with a folding spare tire, be sure to investigate the fine print in your owner’s manual as some of these tires are only good for a single use and can be costly to replace.

The spare tire is an often over-looked safety component to consumers purchasing a vehicle, whether it be new or used. Vehicles which come equipped with a full-size or temporary spare tire should be checked frequently (when you check your air pressure monthly) for inflation and age. Full-sized spare tires should be included in tire rotations to ensure they wear evenly alongside the rest of the tires on the vehicle. Most temporary spare tires are designed only to endure 50 miles of travel at no more than 50mph. This is often enough to get you safely to an accredited repair facility to have your tire repaired or replaced. If this is not possible, it is recommended to call a tow truck.

Whichever option your vehicle comes equipped with, it is essential that manufacturer’s recommended usages and instructions are followed to ensure your safety.

Drop by one of our two locations, 40 Morrow Road or 696 Bayview Drive in Barrie and let one of Action Tire’s trained professional inspect your spare tire for age, wear and inflation.

Before the days of compact compressors and flat repairs in a can, cars came equipped with spare tires. Whether compact or full-size, a spare tire could be found in any and every vehicle on the road. An often neglected safety feature, that “donut” provided a safe return home after a tire failure. From the iconic bulging trunk lid of the Lincoln Continental to the dual side-mount spare tires of such classics as the Nash Ambassador and the Cadillac B, the spare tire was a statement of safety and security. As time passed, vehicle manufacturers began to favour a more compact, space-saving spare tire and sought creative ways to hide them. Most spare tires can be found in a vehicle’s trunk underneath the carpeting or tucked away neatly under the vehicle itself. Spare tires can be found prominently displayed on the tailgate of many SUV’s.

Fitting a Spare Tire into a Fuel Efficient Vehicle

With rising gas prices and a new-found awareness of our impact on the environment, many vehicle manufacturers are finding themselves pressured to produce vehicles with better fuel economy and reduced emissions. In order to achieve this, manufacturers are trying to reduce any unnecessary weight in mid-size vehicles, putting the weight of the spare tire & necessary tools on the chopping block. Car companies are also striving to produce smaller sub-compacts with ample passenger and storage space. Many of today’s sub-compact vehicles would be hard-pressed to fit a temporary spare tire.

What is a manufacturer to do in order to maintain safety standards while leaving space and reducing weight?

The answer: run-flat tires, folding spare tires, mini air compressors or the dreaded tire repair foam. You will find each of these as an original equipment safety option from virtually every vehicle manufacturer on the planet. In fact, many new vehicles at dealerships today will require you to upgrade to a higher option package in order to be equipped with a compact spare tire. Choosing to add a spare tire to your new vehicle purchase can be a costly addition, up to $700 or more depending on the manufacturer. Our next blog post will explore each alternative option being offered by car makers in new vehicles and the upsides and downsides of each versus a conventional spare.

Though Barrie’s winter has not been ideal for cold-weather outdoor enthusiasts, it is still likely Ontario will fall victim to at least one more cold snap, with harsh winds covering our roads in ice. Whether assisting a fellow driver on the side of the road or caught in your own predicament, it is always important to make sure you are prepared with a properly stocked emergency kit.

Necessities of your Emergency Car Kit

The following are recommended by the Government of Canada’s GetPrepared.ca site as items you should have in this kit.

● Food – that won’t spoil, such as energy bars

● Water – in plastic bottles so they won’t break if frozen (change every six months)

● Blanket

● Extra clothing and shoes

● First aid kit – with seatbelt cutter

● Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush

● Candle in a deep can and matches

● Wind–up flashlight

● Whistle – in case you need to attract attention

● Roadmaps

● Copy of your emergency plan and personal documents

Also, keep these additional items inside your trunk:

● Sand, salt or cat litter (non clumping)

● Antifreeze/windshield washer fluid

● Tow rope

● Jumper cables

● Fire extinguisher

● Warning light or road flares

Other Hints

It is also important to note that cell phones may significantly cut down on the time it takes for you to contact help, whether you are involved in an accident or are stranded on the side of the road. Ultimately, staying hydrated, warm and safe inside your vehicle will be key to riding out the wait for help, whether it is a few minutes or several hours.

To help avoid an accident, stop by one of Action Tires two locations and have one of our service representatives inspect your tires to ensure they’re ready to stand up to tough winter driving.

Installing winter tires on your vehicle is a great step in ensuring you have a safe driving experience on the slippery winter roads within Barrie and surrounding area. However, simply installing winter tires is not enough. Understanding how ambient temperature (temperature inside the tire) can affect your winter tires can help make the difference in your safety and the life of your tires. In order to apply the 3 T’s of tires to winter tires, we need to talk about the temperature outdoors as the rolling temperature (inside the tire)

When changing from summer tires to winter tires, whether they are from the previous season or new, it is important to understand the three aspects of a winter tire: the tread depth, traction, and temperature can help make sure you reach your destination safely even when road conditions are treacherous.

This post on temperature is the third in our series of three about the most important aspects of buying winter tires in Barrie:

Temperature and your winter tires

All-season or summer performance tires used in freezing temperatures lose their elasticity and their ability to provide sufficient traction on frozen roads. Winter tires are manufactured with softer rubbers which remain pliable in cold temperatures down to -40°C. Temperature also affects the air pressure in your tires. With every 5°C drop in ambient temperature, the air pressure in your tires will drop 1 pound per square inch (PSI). Checking the air pressure in your tires at least once a month will help ensure optimal ride comfort, safety and prolong the life of your tires. Be sure to follow the vehicle manufacturers’ recommended inflation for your vehicle. Check with a tire professional before deviating from the recommended pressure.

What about All-season or Mud & Snow tires?

Tire with the designation “M&S” (located on your tire’s sidewall) or all-season radials are designed to perform safely in most weather conditions, including some aspects of winter driving. Transport Canada warns; this representation can be very misleading as these tires are not designed to perform in heavy snow or ice and can lose traction when temperatures dip below freezing. Look for tires stamped with the peaked mountain snowflake to ensure your tires have been built to stand up to frozen winter roads and extreme winter conditions.

Winter tires are purpose-built to handle harsh winter conditions with tread designed to evacuate snow from the tire, added sipes for increased traction on ice, and softer rubber designed to remain flexible in freezing temperatures.
